Brahmaputra Ropeway - India’s Longest River Ropeway Everything You Need to Know
The country’s longest river ropeway called the Brahmaputra River ropeway connects the northern and southern banks of the Brahmaputra River and was inaugurated on Monday 24th August 2020. The inauguration ceremony was carried out by Assam’s health and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Guwahati development department minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya. The project’s foundation was laid in 2009 and it was finally completed in 2020.
Why is this ropeway special or any different from the rest? Considered as an engineering marvel this newly opened ropeway boasts of being the first of its kind. Stretched out to a length of 2 kms this is the first time that ropeway towers were built deep within the bed of one of the major rivers in the country.

Which Parts Does It Connect: The ropeway connects the Kachari Ghat on the southern side to the main city of Guwahati on the northern bank? This connection has been done to enable regular commuters, especially college goers, by reducing their travel time by 8 minutes! Initially, this connection was done with the help of ferries that took 45 minutes to over an hour to cover.

Ropeway Design: Assam minister said that the ropeway is one of the most advanced and the longest river crossing aerial tramway systems in India. It is a twin-track, single haul, bi cable double reversible jig back system. Every intention is to make the ropeway experience for the tourists to make it more convenient and smooth for the passengers onboard. It also has 2 cabins to accommodate 30 passengers as a whole.
What The Ropeway Journey Entails: The almost 2 km long trip will take you over the peacock island that is home to Umananda temple which is also the smallest habituated river island in the world. The southern end of the ropeway terminus is located very close to the famous Doul Govinda Temple. While en route you can get spectacular glimpses and sights of Neelachal hills (home to Kamakhya Devi Temple) and the Saraighat Bridge from your cabin car.
