12 Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva |
Parvati is supposed to be the avatar of Mahashakti in this
world. In her previous birth as Sati, she had given up her life in her Yoga Agni
on being angered at a Yajna held by her father Daksha where Shiva was not
invited. Grieved Shiva performed Tandava with Sati’s dead body in his arms.
Devas prayed to Lord Vishnu to save the earth which trembled under the fierce
dance of Shiva. Lord Vishnu let go of his Sudharshna Chakra to cut the dead
body of Sati into small pieces which then fell on the earth to give rise to
Shakti peethas. Temples dedicated to Shakti are mainly found in the Himalayan
region. Most of the temples are found in Himachal Pradesh.
